Coat of Arms (a thick black slash between three black balls on a silver background) of most Cottons herein mentioned
(including the Cottons of Cotton, Hampstall-Ridware, Bold, Crakemarsh, etc.)
The Crest (a gold falcon about to take off in flight from a green mountain) is that of Crakemarsh
The following, while being derived in large part, from previously published materials, has, with a certain few exceptions, not been verified against original documents. Even today, with modern research tools, it is all too easy to make mistakes. In the past, the frequency with which error crept into genealogical work was higher. One should, therefore assume that at least10% and perhaps 20 or 30% of the following will eventually need to be rewritten as the research of original records progresses. For the first 12 generations (down to Walter Cotton of Crakemarsh), I am indebted to an extract of The Heraldry of Thornton Manor by Barry R. Holliss, esq., which can be found at a website dedicated to Thornton Manor (http://www.mkheritage.co.uk/wdahs/Thornton/docs/shields.html). This extract made it possible to correct many unclear points in the Cotton pedigree (though assuredly many more continue to exist) to be found in a Harleian Society manuscript (Harl. MSS. 6128, f. 33, & c.) and in The Heraldic Visitations of Staffordshire (edited by H. Sydney Grazebrook, Esq., published in London in 1885 by Mitchell and Hughes). Parish records for the 12th through the 15th generations of the Crakemarsh Cottons were consulted by Dr. Neil Thompson of Salt Lake City and, so, this information should be considered definitive. Information on the presumed descendants of the Crakemarsh Cottons in America is derived from the work of Dr. Neil Thompson and William Melvin Cotton, and, despite the current scantiness of information supplied by this webpage, should be considered definitive as far as it goes. The presumed relationship of the American Cottons with the Crakemarsh Cottons is based on a convergence of DNA evidence with other evidence based on the written record, such as a comparison of wills and parish records on both sides of the Atlantic. The combined weight of evidence does not yet provide absolute proof but it is compelling. Further work will be done on this matter, the most important being the search for two Cottons (for DNA testing purposes) with a solidly established and absolutely provable ancestry to any of the pre-19th century English Cottons listed below. Any assistance in locating such individuals would be greatly appreciated. Information on the last of the English Crakemarsh Cottons was taken from the above-mentioned Thornton Manor website and appears to be definitive as far as it goes, though it does not make absolutely clear the nature of the connection with the earlier Crakemarsh Cottons, therefore making it impossible to include them in the numbering system which is employed below. Information on William Cotton (11.04), Bishop of Exeter, his parents, and his descendants come from the website of The Rev Dr Garry Stuart Gibson (see below for more information). Information regarding the Connington Cottons (the Cottons whose most famous representative was Sir Robert Bruce Cotton) was taken from the http://www.stirnet.com website, a website which is to be highly recommended and which is deserving of support.
01.01 William de Cotun, b. before 1244, lived during the reign of Henry III (1216 - 1272), probably a near relative of Hugh Cotton and/or Henry Cotton who witness legal documents in co. Chester in 1270.
?w = (?)
02.01 Simon de Cotun, b. before 1265, co. Chester, lived during the reign of Edw. I (1272-1307)
?w = (?) Grosvenor, Mentioned in Ormerod's "The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester" (vol. iii, p. 145) as being the daughter of Robert Grosvenor
of Hulme (who d. about 1286 and was an ancestor of all the Grosvenors referred to below). This Robert Grosvenor purchased the Manor of Allostock
in 1270/1, thus being old enough to have had a daughter old enough to have been Simon de Cotun's wife. This is based on the assumption that, in order
for William, the son of this this marriage, to have been of an age to witness various deeds in 1307 and to have been granted land in that year, he
would have had to have been born by 1286 at the latest. Assuming a birth in 1286, the latest probable date for the birth of his mother would be 1271.
The son of the Robert Grosvenor who died about 1286 was yet another Robert Grosvenor was born about 1284 (d. about 1338), who was the Robert Grosvenor
who granted land and the use of a modified Grosvenor coat of arms to the William Cotton mentioned immediately below. (See, "The Ancestor, an Illustrated
Quarterly Review", Vol. I (April 1902), pp. 160-188 & Vol. II (July 1902), pp. 129-155.
03.01 (?s of 02.01+?w) William de Cotun, b. 1286 or earlier, d. between 1337 or 1343, witnessed legal documents in 1307 in co. Chester. According to a
deposition in the Scrope and Grosvenor coat of arms trial of 1386, he is recorded as having been granted the use of the Grosvenor Coat of Arms as used at that
time (with addition of three balls to differentiate the Cotton coat of arms from that of the Grosvenors) by Robert Grosvenor (d. about 1338), son of Robert
Grosvenor of Hulme who died about 1286. This coat of arms was subsequently recognized at visitations carried out by the College of Arms in the 16th and 17th
centuries. The original Grosvenor coat of arms was a gold bend on a blue background. As a result of the 1386 trial, the right to this coat of arms was judged
as belonging to the Scrope family and a new coat of arms was granted to the Grosvenors, as the king judged that a simple differentiation of the arms would not
distinguish clearly enough between the Scrope and Grosvenor families. Probably, in reaction to the king's judgement and out of prudence, these Cottons would have
changed what must have been a coat of arms consisting of gold bend between three gold balls on a blue background to a coat of arms consisting of a black bend between
three black balls on silver background. In any case, there is no record of the Cottons of ever being in conflict with the Scropes over their use of the Cotton
(=Grosvenor with additions for purposes of differentiation) coat of arms. (See, "The Ancestor, an Illustrated Quarterly Review", Vol. I (April 1902), pp. 160-188.)
Nor was future recognition by the College of Arms denied them. William Cotton and his wife, Joan, are mentioned in Ormerod's as having received a grant of lands in
Hanley in the year 34 (1306) of Edward I. These lands were granted by Robert Grosvenor (d. about 1338). (See, "The Ancestor, an Illustrated Quarterly Review",
Vol. I (April 1902), pp. 160-188.) In the years 6 and 10 of Edward III (1333 & 1337), William Cotton appears with his wife, Isabel, in surviving legal records (see,
"The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester", Vol. II, p. 785).
